COURSE OUTLINE AND OBJECTIVES FOR PHYSICS 20
Lacombe Composite High School
Teacher: Mr. Kyle Brown
Room: 2016
Phone: 403-782-8726 ext 2620
Prescribed Text:
Ackroyd, et. al.: Pearson Physics: Pearson Education Canada, 2007.
Course Objectives
This course can be divided into four sections. Students should be able to demonstrate knowledge, appropriate skills and processes, and related NOS (Nature of Science) connections associated with the following:
1. Kinematics (1. Students will describe motion in terms of displacement, velocity, acceleration and time.
2. Dynamics (1. Students will explain the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on velocity. 2. Students will explain that gravitational effects extend throughout the universe.)
3. Circular Motion, Work and Energy (1. Students will explain circular motion, using Newton’s laws of motion. 2. Students will explain that work is a transfer of energy and that conservation of energy in an isolated system is a fundamental physical concept.)
4. Oscillatory Motion (1. Students will describe the conditions that produce oscillatory motion. 2. Students will describe the properties of mechanical waves and explain how mechanical waves transmit energy.)
EVALUATION
Exams and Quizzes ------------------ 50%
Assignments and Labs --------------- 25%
Final Exam ---------------------- 25%
STUDENT EXPECTATIONS
ATTEND REGULARLY AND ON TIME.
You are expected to attend this class on time unless you are excused because of illness, medical or legal appointments, compassionate reasons, family activities, or religious holidays. The following steps should be taken if you are absent:
1) Inform your teacher of the excused absence by a telephone call or a note as soon as possible, especially if you are going to miss an assignment or test.
2) Get your absence excused/cleared by your parent/guardian telephoning the school OR providing a note.
3) Make arrangements for all work that was missed during the excused absence the day you return.
COMPLETE YOUR WORK TO THE BEST OF YOUR ABILITY. The following are guidelines for the science department regarding missing or incomplete work:
The following steps will be taken if you have any missing or incomplete work:
1) You will be asked to use your enrichment / flex time to get caught up.
2) You may be asked to use some of your lunchtime or Thursday school (3:45 – 5:00 pm)
3) Work that is still incomplete will result in a phone call and/or an email to your parents or guardians.
4) If interventions 1-3 do not work, then a meeting with an administrator will be arranged and a possible suspension issued.

COMPLETE YOUR WORK TO THE BEST OF YOUR ABILITY. The following are guidelines for the science department regarding missing or incomplete work:
- Students are responsible for turning in assignments, labs, quizzes and tests on a date assigned by the teacher. If their work is inexcusably late or not handed in, then they will receive a zero with an “M” or “L” for this task. (M = missing, L = late) The impact will be a ‘0’ in the calculations of marks. Students with “M’s” or “L’s” will be given the opportunity to complete these tasks up until the end of the given unit. This will change the “M” or “L” to an “C”. (C = Complete). This will remove the impact of the zero for this assignment.
- If a student’s work is excusably late (see 2 above), then the student can negotiate with the teacher for an extension or alternative assignment.
- Students with no “M”, “L”, “C”, or “Ex” at the end of the term may choose two assignments and change them from summative to formative assessments.
- LATE: It is expected that you be in your desk and ready to work by the second bell. I am obligated to report to the office on your 5th late.
- Students are expected to take an active part in your schooling. For this reason, you are responsible for finding out about missed assignments.
- Please have a ‘buddy’ pick up assignments for you or check my blog at mrkylebrown.weebly.com
- Bring all appropriate materials to class. This includes textbook, notebook, pen, pencil, eraser and scientific calculator. You will not be allowed to leave class to obtain forgotten materials.
- Go to the bathroom BEFORE class. Don't expect to leave class when nature calls.
- Keep a neat, organized notebook.
- Keep your cell phones put away, unless you are required to use it for course work.
- When I talk, you don’t!!!.
- KEEP YOUR CELL PHONE PUT AWAY!
- HAVE FUN AND ENJOY THIS CLASS!!!!
